HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss head softball coach Natalie Poole announced that Izzy Werdann has been elevated to a full-time assistant coach position.
Â
"I am excited to announce that Elizabeth Werdann is transitioning from our volunteer coach to a full-time assistant position," Poole said. "I have been here less than two months and in that time she has proved that she is passionate about coaching and Southern Miss.
Â
"She has handled all coaching tasks with grace and maturity. I am thankful to have her on staff and am excited about working together in this capacity moving forward."Â
Â
Werdann previously spent two seasons as the Golden Eagles' graduate assistant and most recently was the volunteer assistant coach during the 2022 season. The Pensacola, Fla. native oversaw operations duties, field set up, student managers, and helped with practices.Â
Â
"I am very excited to be a part of this team and thankful to coach Poole for this opportunity," Werdann said. "Under coach Poole's leadership, I am looking forward to a very bright future with this team."
Â
In her first season with Southern Miss, Werdann helped the Golden Eagles get off to a 14-8 start before COVID prematurely ended the season. Most recently, Werdann oversaw a 29-win program during the 2022 season that included a win over then-No. 4 Florida on the road.Â
Â
She has played softball for 15-plus years as a catcher and third baseman. She was an NJCAA All-American in 2017 and a two-time MACJC in 2016 and 2017 before finishing her collegiate career at Ole Miss. She was a state champion at Tate High School.
Â
She graduated from Ole Miss in 2019 with her bachelor's degree in General Studies with minors in Education, Sports and Recreation Management, and Psychology. She graduated Summa Cumme Laude. Before Ole Miss, she graduated with her associate degree from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in May of 2017.
