HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior Alex Helbling (Highlands Ranch, Colo.-Richmond) was named the C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week after keeping two clean sheets in her first two starts for the Golden Eagles, announced Sep. 7.
The Colorado native started the weekend against Little Rock where she earned six saves while facing eight shots in the 2-0 win. Two days later against Jackson State, Helbling made three saves, again facing eight shots on goal as the Black and Gold won comfortably, 6-0. This season, she has not allowed a goal in over 226 minutes between the sticks.
"I am really thrilled to see the handwork that Alex has been putting in since the day she arrived in Hattiesburg," said Head Coach Mohammed El-Zare. "It is well deserved and we are looking forward to see her continue to bring her best and compete. We are very excited for her."
Assistant Coach J.P. Valadares noted, "It is great to see Alex being recognized. She adapted well to a new environment, and stepped up when needed. She gets the importance of a solid goalkeeper unit where one pushes and supports the others, and that kind of environment is key for our success. I'm very happy for her. "
