HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After phenomenal performances over the weekend in Denton, Texas, both Graduate Student Kendell Mindnich (Melbourne Beach, Fla.-Melbourne HS) and Junior Madisyn Flammia (Panama City, Fla.-A. Crawford Mosley HS) were selected as Conference USA Players of the Week, the league announced Sep. 28. Mindnich was honored as the C-USA Goalkeeper of the Week while Flammia was tabbed as a Co-Defensive Player of the Week.
Kendell Mindnich set her career single-game record in saves with 13 between the sticks for the Golden Eagles in the double-overtime draw against North Texas, in Denton. She faced 32 shots overall along with 12 corner kicks and did not allow a goal to notch her third clean sheet of the season. She made seven saves in the first half, five in the second half, and one more in the first overtime period against the Mean Green. The graduate student from Melbourne Beach, Florida leads C-USA in saves per game with 6.5.
Junior Madisyn Flammia was the crucial center back in the Southern Miss backline for the shutout draw in Denton over North Texas. The Florida native was vital in the match, facing an offensive assault for the full 110 minutes as the Mean Green recorded 32 shots. Flammia personally produced three moments of defensive magic, blocking three North Texas shots on goal, two of which were kept out, off of the goal line. Her defensive performance aided the Southern Miss squad in taking the point in Denton, ultimately maintaining its top place in the West Division.
"I am super proud of Kendell and Madi! Madi being named Co-Defensive player of the week is well deserved. She was solid for us in the backline. She made big-time plays for us. Kendell receiving goalie of the week is no shocker. She was a brick wall against UNT. She set the career record saves in a single game. She kept us in the game," added Assistant Coach Carly Mauldin.
"For Kendell to be able to have an impactful performance in a game with high volume shots and crosses is a consequence of hard work, focus, and continuous improvement. Our goalkeeper unit is able to support and push each other day in and day out and it's a privilege to work with such a good group," said Assistant Coach J.P. Valadares about Kendell Mindnich. He also noted, "Madi is solid and reliable in the back and threat in the air. Her soccer IQ makes her really good, but being coachable and willing to grind no matter who she is facing is what makes her special. It's gratifying to see her work being noticed and acknowledged," about Madisyn Flammia.
