HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After bettering her personal record by 20 seconds in the team's first meet in Huntsville, Ala., last weekend, Southern Miss junior Lina May earned Conference USA Runner of the Week honors by the league office.
The Vancleave, Miss. native posted a time of 17:25.55 in the 5K to finish 16th overall at the North Alabama Showcase, which featured over 200 runners. After missing last season due to injury, May moved her from 11th to fifth in program history for the 5K in her first race back.
"It's awesome for Lina to be recognized by the conference," head coach Nick Gibson said. "She deserves it. She went and competed against some of the best in the country and performed well. There was a lot of really good teams at this meet and for her to be in the top 20 is quite the accomplishment."
Her time currently sits at third in the 5K for Conference USA in the early part of the season.
May and the rest of the Golden Eagles XC group return to action next week as they take part in the Joe Paine Notre Dame Invite in South Bend, Ind.
