Southern Miss Travels To Grambling To Take On Tigers

Hattiesburg, Miss. – The Southern Miss soccer team continues on the road as they travel to Grambling, La., to take on the Tigers, Sunday, Aug. 22, at 1 p.m. at the GSU Soccer Field.
Assistant Coach J.P. Valadares noted, "We are looking forward to building up from a performance where we were able to see glimpses of our quality. A full season means matches on top of matches and is great to have that early on in our schedule to expose our young players to the demands of the college game. It is exciting to see us maturing and learning in every game."
Series History: Southern Miss leads the series, 2-0, which started in 2017.
Last Meeting: The last meeting between USM and GSU was on Aug. 31, 2018, in Grambling, La. The Black and Gold went on to win the match, 4-3. Southern Miss opened the scoring in the 11th minute from a goal by Ashton Stennis. Grambling State then scored two, putting the Tigers in front, 2-1. A 38th-minute goal by JoAnnie Ramos leveled the score at the break. After the intermission, goals by Miah Zuazua and Hannah Abrams gave the Golden Eagles a 4-2 lead. A late Tiger goal would not be enough as USM held on to win, 4-3.
Last Time In Hattiesburg: Southern Miss and Grambling State last met in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Aug. 31, 2017, as the Golden Eagles won, 4-1. The Black and Gold opened the scoring in the 35th minute off a header by Katie Richmond. In the 60th and 62nd minutes of the game, Ola Akinniyi notched two goals, giving USM a 3-0 lead. In the 69th minute, the Tigers were able to grab one back for a 3-1 scoreline. A late, 85th-minute goal by Andrea Rivera ultimately gave the final score of 4-1.
