Football Goes Through Fifth Fall Camp Practice Tuesday Morning

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – First-year Southern Miss football coach Will Hall expects a standard within the program and demands that from his team each and every day.
When the Golden Eagles switched venues for their fifth practice of fall camp Tuesday morning to the game field at The Rock, Hall did not see that standard over the first portion of practice and had his squad start over 15 minutes into the workout.
"It was kind of a sluggish start and we weren't really ready to go, so what did we do, we started that thing over," said Hall of his team's practice. "The standard is the standard. If we aren't going to meet the standard, we aren't going to waste time. We started over and our leaders stepped up and we got going after that."
Southern Miss used the session to get different aspects of the kicking game covered, including half-line punt and punt block and the competition gave his coaches something to watch as well.
When asked after practice if he thought either the offense or defense was ahead of the other group, Hall said that the two groups collaborate together in their effort in building this program. Instead, he said the time is used to see who can step up and contribute during the season.
"We are looking to see who is going to rise to the occasion and provide more depth and win a starting spot," said Hall. "That is what we are looking for. Who is going to be those top 45 to 60 guys on who we are going to have to win games with (during the year)."
Southern Miss will take its first day off of camp, Wednesday, before returning to work Thursday morning in full pads for the first time.
The Golden Eagles will open their 105th football season, Saturday, Sept. 4, at South Alabama. Game time is set for 7 p.m.
