HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Conference USA announced its annual academic awards for the 2021 track and field season, with two Golden Eagles making the team in sophomore Dylan Evans and freshman Sarah Parnell.
"Dylan and Sarah are two fantastic athletes that also excel in the classroom," head coach Jon Stuart said of the accomplishment. "They are the epitome of what it means to be a student-athlete and I'm extremely proud of them and can't wait to see what their future holds."
Evans has compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA in his two years as a Golden Eagle as a political science major with a business administration minor. The McKinney, Texas native is a two-time nominee to the Commissioner's Honor Roll and a two-time recipient of the C-USA Academic Medal, while also being named to the President's List at Southern Miss all four semesters.
On the track, Evans found himself on the podium at the Samford Invite in the 800m with a season-best 1:57.24 to finish second, while earning points in both the 800m and DMR at the Conference USA Indoor Championships. As the third leg of the men's 4x400 relay, Evans finished third at the Conference USA Outdoor Championships, while qualifying for the NCAA East Regionals that will take place next week.
Parnell, who has named to numerous honor societies, while finishing with a 4.2 GPA as a graduate of Auburn High School in Alabama, continued to shine in the classroom in her first year at Southern Miss. The kinesiology major compiled a perfect 4.0 GPA to earn the honor. She was also named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, Southern Miss President's List and earned a C-USA Academic Medal.
She ranks at No. 8 all-time in program history in the 3000m steeplechase, while having the second-best time as a freshman in the event. Parnell found the podium as a member of the DMR team at the C-USA Indoor Championships, taking second with a time of 12:03.23 and finished in the top 50 in all three meets during her first cross country season.
The pair are a part of a historic academic semester in which Southern Miss student-athletes posted a school-record 3.103 GPA for the spring term.
