HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Rice Owls, one of the league's top annual contenders, were too much for Southern Miss in its C-USA debut, sweeping the Golden Eagles (25-13, 25-10, 25-15) on Sunday. Due to winter weather threats, the two teams will meet again Tuesday at 10 a.m.
Rice (4-3, 3-0 C-USA) built up a substantial lead early to maintain the pressure each set and had nine blocks.
Duquesne Moratzka had a team-high eight kills, while Lauren Talbert added five. Freshman Maddie Stayer, who had two sets for the season, gained valuable experience in her first-career start, including a kill.Â
Madison Lawler and Lauren Talbert recorded 15 and 12 digs, the third-straight match the junior has reached double-figures.
Southern Miss fell to 5-3 and 0-1 in C-USA.
