HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team opens the November portion of its schedule this Saturday when face Conference USA West Division foe North Texas at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
The game will be streamed through ESPN+ and can also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield along with channel 991 on the SiriusXM app.
It will be the annual Salute to Armed Forces game at The Rock, while the 2011 C-USA championship team will be honored during the contest as they celebrate their 10-year reunion weekend.
Southern Miss (1-7 overall, 0-4 C-USA) heads into the contest looking to snap a six-game losing streak after falling at Middle Tennessee last weekend.
The Golden Eagle defense played well against the Blue Raiders, giving up just 287 yards total yards and forcing a season-high four turnovers, while limiting the Blue Raiders to just two touchdowns – one coming on a short field following a Southern Miss turnover.
That type of play from coordinator Austin Armstrong's unit has been consistent throughout the season as the Golden Eagles boast a No. 40 national ranking in total defense by allowing 346.6 yards per contest.
One of its members, junior Santrell Latham, from Meridian, Miss., enjoyed his best game of the year last weekend with seven tackles to go along with two fumble recoveries and a forced fumble. He now has four forced fumbles which leads the country in that category, while also ranking tied for No. 7 in fumble recoveries.
Malik Shorts, another member of the Nasty Bunch defense, a redshirt sophomore from Bassfield, Miss., holds the team lead in tackles with 63, while also ranking first in interceptions (two) and pass breakups (seven). Defensive lineman Eriq Kitchen paces the squad in tackles for loss with 5.5 of his 24 total this fall.
On offense, junior wide receiver Jason Brownlee stays atop the squad's receiving totals after collecting a career-high nine catches for 120 yards and a touchdown last week. His receiving totals include 29 catches, 374 yards and three touchdowns.
On the ground, freshman Frank Gore, Jr., remains the top rusher with 526 yards and a 4.0 yards per carry average. Despite not catching a pass for the first time this season last weekend, Gore also ranks first in all-purpose yards with 686, as he has also accumulated 160 receiving yards as well.
Another freshman, quarterback Jake Lange, will make his fourth start of the campaign, having thrown for 727 yards and four touchdowns on 62-of-112 throws this fall.
Following the North Texas contest, the Golden Eagles take to the road the next two weekends, before returning home for its season finale, Saturday, Nov. 27, against FIU. Game time is set for 2 p.m.
