HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss women's basketball is set to open their 2021-22 season in less than a month against the William Carey Crusaders on Nov. 9 at Reed Green Coliseum. Before head coach Joye Lee-McNelis embarks on her 18th season at the helm, we'll introduce the six newest Lady Eagles to join the program. Next up, is freshman Emma Wallhoff from Fort Lauderdale, Fla.
Q: Why did you choose to play basketball at Southern Miss?
Wallhoff: I loved the coaches and it just felt like the perfect fit for me.
Q: If you could trade places with one of your coaches for a game day which would it be?
Wallhoff: Coach Tony [Brutofsky] because he is just chilling.
Q: If you were stranded on a deserted island, what three teammates would you bring with you?
Wallhoff: Kelsey because she is funny, Emmy because she would figure out how to get out of there and Brikayla because she is caring.
Q: What jersey number will you wear, and does that hold any special meaning to you?
Wallhoff: I wear No. 5 because my dad wore No. 23, so 2+3=5.
Q: What is your favorite movie?
Wallhoff: The Notebook.
Q: Who has influenced your basketball career the most and how do they still influence your career?
Wallhoff: My mom and dad. I wouldn't be playing if it wasn't for them. They have instilled a great work ethic and I know I have to earn what I want.
Q: What has been the highlight of your basketball career so far?
Wallhoff: Setting the national girls high school record for most 3 pointers.
Q: As a newcomer, in what ways do you believe you can make an immediate impact on the team this year?
Wallhoff: Being positive and a light to the team.
Q: If Southern Miss could play in a tournament anywhere in the world, where would you want to play?
Wallhoff: The Bahamas. We could go to the beach and swim with the pigs.
Q: Do you have any quotes or personal mantra that you try to play by
Wallhoff: Be you and give everything you've got.
Q: What makes the coaching staff at Southern Miss different from other coaches you've had in your career?
Wallhoff: They are hard on you, but want what's best for you.
Q: If you could give a message to Southern Miss fans what would it be?
Wallhoff: Come out and support us. It's going to be a fun season. SMTTT!
