HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The first year of the Will Hall era culminates this Saturday, Nov. 27, when the Southern Miss football team plays host to FIU in a 2 p.m. contest at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
The Golden Eagles (2-9 overall, 1-6 C-USA) look to end the season on a good note with two-straight victories, after defeating Louisiana Tech last weekend 35-19 in Ruston. After opening the season with a 48-10 win over Long Island, FIU (1-10, 0-7) has dropped 10-straight games including a 49-7 setback at home last weekend against North Texas.
This contest marks the second meeting between the two schools in football, with the first one also taking place in Hattiesburg during the 2013 season. The Panthers tipped a final-second field goal attempt for the Golden Eagles to hold on for a 24-23 triumph in that affair.
Heading into this season's finale, the Golden Eagle defense continues to play well after not given up a touchdown last week against the Bulldogs. Southern Miss holds the No. 46 ranked total defense in the country, allowing 355.5 yards per contest.
Sophomore Hayes Maples enjoyed a standout performance against LA Tech to lead the defense with a team-best tying eight tackles to go along with two forced fumbles, a tackle for loss and a pass breakup. Maples ranks second on the squad in tackles in 2021 with 55.
Malik Shorts continues to lead Southern Miss in tackles for the season with 89 as well as two interceptions and a team-best seven pass breakups.
On offense, the Golden Eagles utilized the wildcat formation exclusively for the second game and it came up big for the Golden Eagles. Dajon Richard registered a career-best 120 yards rushing, while Frank Gore, Jr., who saw limited duty against the Bulldogs, threw two touchdown passes to Jason Brownlee and rushed for another score.
Gore, Jr., leads the team with 733 yards rushing, and also registered 155 yards receiving and thrown for 108 yards on 6-of-11 passing with two touchdowns. Brownlee sits atop the Golden Eagle charts for all of their receiving categories in catches (41), yards (545) and touchdown grabs (6).
Against LA Tech last weekend, the Golden Eagles recorded a pair of 70-yard plus touchdown drives, having done that eight times in 2021.
The game will be streamed via ESPN3 and also be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss Sports Network by Learfield as well as XM channel 388 and the SiriusXM app on channel 978.
