HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Members of the Southern Miss women's tennis program spent Tuesday morning volunteering their time for less fortunate individuals in the Hattiesburg community.
The Golden Eagles spent their time with the Hattiesburg-based organization, Christian Services, Inc., cooking and preparing Thanksgiving meals for people in the local community. This marks the second time the women's tennis program collaborated with the group to assist the people of Hattiesburg.
Australian senior Monique Burton spoke about how rewarding their volunteering experience was. She was a member of the team that assisted with Christian Services, Inc. in 2019.
"It was very rewarding to give back to the community," Burton said. "It was great to help out in any way we could."
Suhana Das echoed Burton's appreciation for the chance to give back to the Hattiesburg community.
"I am grateful that we were given a chance to give back the help that was needed to the community," Das said.
Alyssa Richter, a freshman from Germany, spoke about how important it was for members of the team to be unified when volunteering.
"We assisted in preparing food for less fortunate people in our community," Richter said. "Our team work helped us work more effectively and I think we did this very well."
Sarah Medik, who was recently inducted into the Southern Miss M-Club, spoke not just about the experience of volunteering, but how she enjoyed the time she was able to spend with her teammates.
"It was a pleasure to help the community," Medik said. " It was also great to spend time with my teammates."
Ebru Zeynep Yazgan, who enters her fourth season as a Golden Eagle, expressed how thankful she was to assist the community through the team's volunteer work.
"I am so thankful we were given the opportunity to give love back to our community," Yazgan said.
Head coach Steve Schram expressed his pride in the program and players for being willing to step up to assist the local community. He also mentioned how important community service is for student-athletes.
"It was a very rewarding experience and I couldn't be more proud of the team and their tremendous efforts in serving the local community," Schram said. "As a team, we stress the importance of community service and giving back to our wonderful community."
