HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss freshman outside hitter Mia Wesley was named a second team All-Conference USA honoree by the conference on Thursday. Wesley's recognition comes following a record-breaking season.
Wesley dominated in her first season as a Golden Eagle. Her 428 kills are the most by a freshman in program history, as Wesley shattered the previous record of 378, set by Saundra Williams in 1985.
The Golden Eagle offense was powered by Wesley's overwhelming hitting numbers, as she finished the season with 1,256 total attempts. She said that her development stemmed from the amount of opportunities she had to hit throughout the season.
"As a hitter, this season gave me a lot of experience by hitting different sets and having a lot of attempts," Wesley said. "My toolbox developed as I was able to hit different shots."
The Orem, Utah native also shined throughout Southern Miss' conference slate. Her 4.74 kills per set in C-USA play ranked second in the league, as did her 204 total kills. Her season was highlighted with a 29-kill, 13-dig performance against UTEP on Oct. 16. She posted five double-doubles in conference play to go along with her impressive hitting totals.
Wesley's impressive season was not limited to her hitting ability, as she led Southern Miss in service aces, with 32 throughout the 2021 season. She also ended the year with the third-most digs (244) and blocks (41) of any Golden Eagle.
She becomes the first freshman in program history to earn All-C-USA honors and joins 32 All-Conference USA winners throughout Southern Miss' history.
"I feel honored to receive this award and even more excited for next season," said Wesley. "It's an honor to be recognized and it's only up from here. To the top!"
