Southern Miss Launches #McNelisStrong Campaign

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Following the announcement of Coach Joye Lee-McNelis' battle with stage 4 lung cancer earlier this month there has been an overwhelming amount of support shown towards Coach McNelis, by not only the Southern Miss family, but also the entire college basketball community.
"Words cannot express how thankful my family and I are for everyone who has reached out to me in some way. I am overwhelmed emotionally and thankful for all that have lifted me up in prayer, called or text. I am humbled and so thankful," McNelis said of the support.
Coach McNelis has partnered with the Hospital Patient Navigation Program at Forrest General to provide resources to other patients in need. The program works to help identify cultural, language, insurance and financial barriers.

Coach McNelis recently received good news about her treatment options. Foundation one testing of the original tumor came back with EGFR mutation, which allows McNelis to take a targeted therapy beginning soon. Her doctors will reevaluate in four weeks.
