HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss football team returned to practice Wednesday morning as they continue to get ready for its season opener South Alabama, Thursday, Sept. 3.
The Golden Eagles, which finished their seventh practice of summer camp, continue to have position battles on both side of the football as the team gets closer to the regular season and coach Jay Hopson said that there were starting jobs still up in the air.
One position battle that he highlighted when speaking to the media via a Zoom interview following practice was at running back, which seems to should have great depth heading into 2020.
"I have said that you have to have three at running back to be successful," said Hopson. If you don't, then you are insane. That is a position that takes too many hits and guys have to get in and out of the ballgame. I have been really pleased with our running backs. Those guys have done a great job."
As Hopson and the rest of the team hear about leagues around the country not playing football this fall due to COVID-19, his message to the team has been simple during summer camp.
"Just like I told our players today, we have a 12-game schedule," said Hopson. "As of Aug. 12, we have 12 games and we are kicking off Sept. 3. We are preparing that way. We have no other choice because that is our schedule."
Hopson also announced following practice the addition of Trey Lowe to the roster, a quarterback graduate transfer from West Virginia, who will be listed as a redshirt sophomore for the program this season.
"Trey Lowe has done a good job as he is just starting to get an (understanding) of the scheme," said Hopson. "He is an exception talent and we are excited to have him in the fold."
