Dear Softball,
Â
Thank you.
Â
Thank you for sculpting me into the woman I am today. You have taught me so much about life that I could never possibly list it all. You have taught me how to handle failure. After all, the game of softball is a game of failure; if you fail six times out of 10, you're an All-American. You have taught me how to lead, and lead well. You have taught me how to work hard for things that I love. Work ethic, punctuality, responsibility, character, and respect are all things you have taught me that I can carry with me into all walks of life. The list is miles long.
Â
Thank you for bringing me all of my very best friends. From the time I first stepped on a T-ball field to this very day, I have made friends through your game that will last a lifetime; some of which will stand alongside me on my wedding day. I have made some of the best memories in my life with my teammates and family through the game of softball.
Â
Thank you for the opportunities that I have been given because of you. I get to graduate in six short months with little to no student debt. I have had the opportunity to experience so many things and travel to so many places that most people where I am from have not. I got to win a state championship and play in the Women's College World Series. The list of opportunities brought to me by you are endless.
Â
Most importantly, thank you for the University of Southern Mississippi. At this school, I was able to rekindle a flame with you that was nearly burnt. I was able to find myself both on and off the field. The support from my teammates, fans, and coaching staff at Southern Miss was and is indescribable. The coaching staff was impeccable, and I was able to learn so much from them. I was beyond proud to wear a Southern Miss jersey in my final year to play the game. I wouldn't have wanted to finish my career with any other team.
Â
If I could do it all over again, I wouldn't change a thing.
Â
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart.
Â
XOXO,
Â
Lacey Sumerlin
