Softball Wins Series Against Jacksonville State

Freshman catcher Hannah Borden led the Golden Eagles offense on Saturday.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team (14-7) split Saturday's doubleheader against Jacksonville State (11-9) at the Southern Miss Softball Complex, earning a series win. Southern Miss won the series, 2-1.
In game one of the doubleheader, Southern Miss defeated Jacksonville State, 4-3 in walk-off fashion. Jacksonville State took game two by a final score of 3-0.
Game 1 – Southern Miss 4, Jacksonville State 3
Freshman catcher Hannah Borden manufactured all four of Southern Miss' runs in the game, propelling the Golden Eagles to victory.
Borden went two-for-four in the game with a run scored, four runs batted in, and a two-run home run.
Borden's most clutch hit of the game came in the bottom of the seventh inning when she roped a walk-off single through the left side.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Makenna Pierce had another solid outing in the circle for the Golden Eagles. Pierce entered the game in relief of freshman right-handed pitcher Savanna Wood in the top of the fourth inning and went on to finish the game.
In what turned into a pitcher's duel between herself and her former high school (Daphne High School) teammate and Jacksonville State relief pitcher Reagan Watkins, Pierce delivered by tossing 3.2 scoreless innings. Over the span of 3.2 innings pitched, the Daphne, Ala. native surrendered just one hit, issued three walks, and struck out four.
Pierce (5-0) earned the win and Watkins (2-1) suffered the loss.

Scoring opportunities were limited for both teams in the contest, but Jacksonville State capitalized on a Southern Miss fielding error by scoring a run, and the used an RBI single and an RBI double to produced its other two runs.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher Kaylan Ladner got the nod in the circle for the Golden Eagles, and pitched well. Ladner tossed a full seven innings and allowed three runs (two earned), issued two walks and struck out two.
Jacksonville State starting pitcher Alexus Jimmerson (1-0) collected the win and Ladner (2-4) took the loss.
