Eric Richards earns his second-straight award after his performance at Houston.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Eric Richards of Southern Miss' Track and Field squad garnered his second-straight Male Field Athlete of the Week accolade from Conference USA on Tuesday after his record-breaking performance at the Houston Invitational.
Richards, a senior from Utica, Miss., earned the accolade after his first-place finish, breaking his own personal record and the school record he already owned with a 7'4.5" jump at the Houston G5 & Super 22 Invitational. He was already ranked No. 1 in the Conference with his jump from the first meet of the season, but extended his placement with his new mark.
Along with breaking records, he broke into the top-five of the NCAA, tying for third place. His jump is also No. 11 in the world.
Richards competed against student-athletes from the University of Houston, Stephen F. Austin, Lamar, UTRGV, ULM, Grand Canyon, Texas Southern, Sam Houston State, and FIU. The second-place finisher had a jump of 6'8.75", meaning the difference between the two jumps was 7.75".
The track and field team will compete again on Feb. 14 and 15 at the Music City Invitational held by Vanderbilt in Nashville, Tenn.
