HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team makes their long awaited return to the court on Friday night at 6 p.m. facing off with Nicholls inside Reed Green Coliseum.
"We're just thrilled to be able to get the opportunity to take the court," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "We've dealt with a lot of things. It's been tough mentally and emotionally with our team. I'm very fortunate to have a great staff that's held us together through all of this. It's exciting to know that gameday is finally going to be here."
The matchups will be broadcast on CUSA.tv. Jason Baker will be on the call for the Southern Miss Radio Network, broadcast on 92.7 the Score and presented by Learfield IMG College.
Scouting the Colonels
• Head Coach DoBee Plaisance enters her 13th season at the helm of the Colonels.
• The Colonels are off to a 1-4 start in the 2020-21 season with a victory over Mobile and losses to Tulane, South Alabama, Jackson State and Alabama on Wednesday.
• Nicholls posted a 13-16 (10-10) record a season ago, finishing the year on a seven game win streak before the season was canceled due to the novel coronavirus pandemic.
• The Colonels were picked to finish ninth in the Southland Conference's annual preseason poll.
• DoBee Plaisance's squad will have an almost entirely different look with the addition of eight newcomers and three returning players who either missed the whole '19-20 season or most of it with an injury.
• Junior Chyna Allen is the leading scorer for the Colonels averaging 12.0 points through the first five games. Sophomore Chelsea Cain leads the squad in rebounding averaging 4.8 boards.
Scouting the Lady Eagles
• The Lady Eagles are 31-14 all-time in season openers.
• Under McNelis, Southern Miss is 12-4 to start the season and have won seven straight.
• McNelis enters her 30th year as a head coach in the 2020-21 season and needs just eight victories to reach 500 career wins.
• Southern Miss returns just 55 starts from the 2019-20 squad. The 55 starts returning rank 13th among C-USA foes only ahead of UAB who returns just two starts.
• Southern Miss is one of the last team at the Division I level to tip-off their season. All other teams in both the Power Five and Group of Five conferences have begun their seasons before the Lady Eagles.
Per Conference USA regulations, Reed Green Coliseum's capacity will be limited to 1,200 fans. A limited number of single game tickets will be made available for each home game. However, the best way to guarantee a ticket to each home game this season is by having season tickets! Season tickets start at just $55.
