HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Six teams and two days of intense September heat made for an exciting fall opener at the Southern Miss Tennis Complex.
This year's field featured No. 28 Alabama, No. 55 South Alabama, UAB, New Orleans, William Carey and the host Golden Eagles.
"We were focused on development, improving and getting healthy," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "Those were the big things. We need to improve quickly, and I feel that this tournament helped us."
Southern Miss will add several more players to its roster before the spring season begins, but the team took advantage of the situation and went split-squad for doubles, which helped players adapt to different styles and chemistry.
"It's the first competition, of course," sophomore Matthieu Peres said. "We have all been training a lot, and I followed my approach with the good competition we had this weekend. We had great doubles and singles play, and while the weather was hard, this was a good event and format for everyone."
Southern Miss will now prepare for the ITA Southern Regionals at Auburn from Oct. 17-20.
