Football Continues in Helmets and Shorts on Saturday

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The normalcy of fall football camp started to sink in Saturday on the Southern Miss campus.
The Golden Eagles returned to action for the second day of practice. After enjoying an overcast and more temperate day on Friday, the heat hit the Joe P. Park Facility today with the squad going through a 2 hour, 45 minute practice.
Over the first couple of days of practice, which has consisted of the squad going through their workout in helmets and shorts, fourth-year coach Jay Hopson has looked for certain things in seeing his team work on before being able to get into full gear next week.
"You are looking at how things start off (in helmets and shorts)," said Hopson. "You make sure they are taking good steps and playing with good leverage. Just doing the little things right in making them good football players.
"Then you look at the retention and what they are doing as far as what the team does play-wise. They are picking right back up where we left off in the spring."
Following the opening day of practice, Hopson said that he wanted his team to get better each day during camp. While he did say that going back and watching the practice later would be the final barometer, he did think things improved from the first to second day of team workouts.
"We had a better day today," said Hopson. "We still have to get better on the little things, but on the whole, I was fairly pleased. I will go back and look (at today's practice) on film and find out exactly just how good or bad it was."
After taking Sunday off, the Golden Eagles return to the practice field Monday as they get closer to the season opener, Saturday, Aug. 31, against Alcorn State at M.M. Roberts Stadium. Game time is 6 p.m.
Both Southern Miss season and single-game tickets are available at SouthernMissTickets.com, by calling 1-800-844-TICK (8425) or 601-266-5418, as well as visiting the Pat Ferlise Ticket Office weekdays from 8 a.m., until 5 p.m.
