Golden Eagles Open 2019 Campaign at Denver Classic

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss volleyball team is set to open its 2019 campaign on Friday night at the Denver Classic. The Golden Eagles open the tournament against Seattle at 3 p.m. (MT).

Friday, 3 p.m. (MT) – Southern Miss vs. Seattle
Saturday, 12 p.m. (MT) – Southern Miss vs. Denver
Saturday, 4 p.m. (MT) – Southern Miss vs. San Francisco
Quick Hits
- The Golden Eagles return five players from last season: Madison Lawler, Ashley Berry, Ashley Chapman, Kellie Garraway and Kinsley Hanback.
- Berry leads the offensive charge in the group after smacking 216 kills in her junior season.
- Six transfers join the Southern Miss program: Chloe Klusman (West Virginia), Jacoby Sims (Oglethorpe), Addie Ashton (UT-Arlington), Kaile Tuisamatatele (Western Nebraska CC), Lindsey Legg (San Diego State) and Piper Matsumoto (LIU Brooklyn).
- Six freshmen join the Southern Miss program: Kess Krutsinger, Summer Johnson, Katie Erdmann, Liana Guillemaud, Gillian Hidalgo and Hallie Phelan.
- Defensively, the Golden Eagles return 773 digs and 98 blocks.
Seattle
The Redhawks open their 2019 season after posting an 11-19 record a year ago. At the WAC tournament, Seattle suffered a three-set loss in the first round against Missouri-Kansas City.
James Finley, in his seventh season, will lead Seattle into the Denver Classic. Finley holds an 80-99 record at the helm of the Redhawks and a career record of 368-252.
Denver
Denver, who finished 27-3 last season, was picked to finish first in the Summit League Preseason Poll. The Pioneers went undefeated in conference play last season but lost to South Dakota in the finals.
From there, Denver lost to Utah in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. Head coach Tom Hogan has guided the Pioneers to five consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances.
San Francisco
The Dons head to Denver a season removed from going 9-20 in regular season play. In WCC play, San Francisco failed to make postseason play after going 2-16 in conference play.
Frank Lavrisha leads the Dons in his third season with the program. Lavrisha is one of the winningest coaches in Division II history.
