The Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship is awarded annually to graduates selected by the Conference USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors. The $4,000 scholarship is intended to aid recipients with tuition costs to a graduate program of their choice. The award was named in honor of the late Dr. Jim Castañeda who served as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative at Rice University for 46 years.

Akinniyi continued to make history after the conclusion of the 2018 season as she was selected to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches NCAA Division I Women's All-South Region First team, becoming the first Golden Eagle to ever earn the honor.
In 2018, Akinniyi helped lead Southern Miss to its best season in program history as the Golden Eagles finished the season as Conference USA's Runner-Up and broke multiple school records.
