Eight Football Players Earn Athlon Sports Preseason Recognition
HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- With exactly 100 days until Southern Miss' season opener, Athlon Sports has released its preseason All-Conference USA teams, featuring eight Golden Eagles.
The headliners include first-teamers Jacques Turner (defensive line) and Racheem Boothe (linebacker). Arvin Fletcher (offensive line) and Ky'el Hemby (safety) each earned spots on the second team, followed by Rachuan Mitchell (cornerback) and De'Michael Harris (kick returner) on the third team. The fourth-team included Tim Jones (wide receiver) and Ty Williams (cornerback).
Turner and Hemby were two of the only three sophomores to earn C-USA All-Defensive recognition out of 22 slots. Boothe continued his disruptive play for the second-straight year, finishing with 48 tackles (10 for loss) and two fumble recoveries.Â
Fletcher appeared on three different spots on the offensive line, including at center mid-season due to an injury to Trace Clopton. Harris, a top-notch track athlete in high school, showed off his versatility in his first year as a Golden Eagle that included the longest overall play of the year, a 79-yard kick return against UTSA.
Jones, a junior out of Biloxi, has continued to improve in his two years on campus. This past season, he was second on the team in catches (42) and yards (508). Williams, a transfer from East Mississippi CC, started the final 10 games and had three interceptions, including two for 40-plus yards at pivotal moments against Marshall and UAB. Mitchell also started 10 games and had three interceptions with 36 tackles.
Southern Miss boasted the nation's No. 3 defense last year, and Hemby was second in the nation with six interceptions in 11 games.
The Golden Eagles begin their season Saturday, Aug. 31 against Alcorn State. The team has just five home games, so fans are encouraged to get on board. Season tickets are available via SouthernMissTickets.com, calling 1-800-844-TICK or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center during normal business hours.
