
Sumerlin and Trahan Named NFCA All-Region Selections

Southern Miss junior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin and junior pitcher Abby Trahan are the first Southern Miss players to earn NFCA All-Regions honors since 2009.

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss junior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin and junior pitcher Abby Trahan were named All-Region selections by the National Fastpitch Coaches Association on Thursday.

Sumerlin was selected to the NFCA Division I South Region First Team and Trahan was selected to the NFCA Division I South Region Third Team. Sumerlin and Trahan are the first Southern Miss players to garner NFCA All-Region honors since Megan Hill in 2009.

Sumerlin, a native of Mobile, Ala. who transferred to Southern Miss after playing her first two seasons at the University of Georgia, was a major contributor for the Golden Eagles during the 2019 season. Sumerlin started all 52 of Southern Miss' games at shortstop and posted a .333 batting average, a .630 slugging percentage and a .458 on-base percentage. In addition, Sumerlin racked up 30 runs scored, 46 hits, 12 doubles, one triple, nine home runs, 42 runs batted in, 87 total bases, 35 walks and one stolen base. The right-handed hitting Sumerlin struck out just eight times over the course of 138 at-bats.

Sumerlin's 42 runs batted in and .630 slugging percentage were a team best for Southern Miss in 2019. She also finished the season tied as the team's leader in home runs and total bases.

Sumerlin ended the season ranked in the top 10 in C-USA in slugging percentage, on-base percentage, runs batted in, doubles, walks, and sac flies.

For the 2019 season, Sumerlin was also tabbed a C-USA All-Conference First Team selection and she was named to the Getterman Classic All-Tournament Team (tournament hosted by Baylor University).

The prestigious honor adds to a long list of accolades for Sumerlin who came to Southern Miss as a highly decorated player. Sumerlin's previous accolades include: 2016 SEC All-Freshman Team selection, SEC Player of the Week, 2016 WCWS participant, 2015 Alabama Softball Gatorade Player of the Year, Alabama's Miss Softball (2015) and 2015 Mobile County Player of the Year just to name a few.

Trahan, the Golden Eagles' ace in 2019 made a major impact in her first season at Southern Miss after transferring from Saint Francis University (Loretto, Pa.).

Trahan appeared in 31 games and made 28 starts for Southern Miss. The right-hander registered a 1.95 earned run average and a 14-12 win/loss record. Additionally, Trahan amassed a total of 169.0 innings pitched, 135 strikeouts, 19 complete games, six complete-game shutouts and one save. She allowed 155 hits, 67 runs, 47 earned runs, 33 walks, 20 doubles, three triples and six home runs. Opponents batted .237 against her and she threw just two wild pitches over the course of the season.

Trahan led the Southern Miss pitching staff in earned run average, wins, appearances, starts, complete games, shutouts and innings pitched for the 2019 season.

Trahan ended the 2019 campaign with the best earned run average in C-USA and she also ranked in the top 10 in opposing batting average, innings pitched, strikeouts, strikeouts looking, wins and games started.

Trahan landed a spot on the 2019 C-USA All-Conference First Team and she was named C-USA Pitcher of the Year.

Like Sumerlin, Trahan came to Southern Miss with a long list of accomplishments to her name.
