HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The 1999 Southern Miss softball team will be welcomed back to campus for a 20-year reunion on Saturday, April 6 and Sunday, April 7 when the Golden Eagles host the UTSA Roadrunners in a weekend series at the Southern Miss Softball Complex in Hattiesburg.
Saturday's doubleheader between Southern Miss and UTSA will begin at 1:00 p.m. (CT) with game two to follow shortly after the conclusion of game one. The Golden Eagles and the Roadrunners will wrap up the series with a single-game series finale at 12:00 p.m. (CT) on Sunday.
The 1999 team finished the season with an overall record of 51-9 and earned a berth in the Women's College World Series, becoming the first team in school history to accomplish the feat. Even more impressive, is the fact that the team did it in its first year of being reinstated after softball was discontinued at Southern Miss following the 1992 season.
The road to the Women's College World Series did not come easy for the 1999 squad as they were assigned to the NCAA Regional hosted by #7 LSU in Baton Rouge, La. along with #12 Oregon State, #9 Oklahoma, Long Beach State and Southern University.
Southern Miss came out on top, winning the regional to advance to the Women's College World Series in Oklahoma City, Okla. In order to advance, Southern Miss notched two wins against Oregon State, one against Oklahoma and one against LSU.
The 1999 team featured three All-Americans and three of the best players to ever wear the Black and Gold; Courtney Blades, Amy Berman and Jen Ford.
