HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss redshirt-senior guard Tyree Griffin added to his lengthy resume with his naming to the National Association of Basketball Coaches' All-District 11 Second Team.
The award is voted by member coaches of the NABC in Division I. Griffin, also an All-Conference USA Second-Team honoree, proved to be arguably the most valuable player in the league. He produced a school-record 233 assists, besting Dallas Dale's 222 in the 1991-92 season. The 15 dimes he had in the 50-point win over Marshall on Jan. 26 were the most-ever by a Golden Eagle against a Division I foe, and were the most in a C-USA game since Charlotte's Sean Colson in 1998.
Griffin's prowess helped Southern Miss to the No. 5 assist/turnover ratio in the country (1.60) while also holding the best percentages in league play for field goal shooting (47.8), field goal defense (40.4)Â and three-point shooting (41.2).
Griffin, a native of New Orleans who transferred to Southern Miss from Oklahoma State for his final two seasons, amassed 434 assists to rank No. 3 in school history (his 201 last season also ranks third). He led the team in minutes (34.5 per game), scoring (13.8 points), and free-throw shooting (72-for-100). Griffin totaled 65 steals this year and 59 last year, ranking third and fifth in program history, respectively.
Southern Miss finished the season 20-13 and in a tie for second place in C-USA. The team made its second-straight trip to the league tourney semifinals and earned a bid in the Roman College Basketball Invitational.
