HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss utilized a solid passing game during the 2019 regular season.
The Golden Eagles used that air attack to post a No. 23 national ranking in passing prior to the start of bowl season (288.6 yards per game) as they continue to prepare for their Jan. 4 matchup with Tulane (6-6) in the Lockheed Martin Armed Forces Bowl.
Junior quarterback Jack Abraham (Oxford, Miss.) became the third Southern Miss quarterback to throw for over 3,000-yards during the season. Before his career is done, Abraham has the inside track of being the most accurate passer in school history as he has completed 70 percent of his passes (481-of-687) over his two seasons.
Still, Abraham cannot do things by himself, hitting 13 different receivers during the year, including junior Tim Jones (Biloxi, Miss.), who leads the team with 66 catches and junior Quez Watkins (Athens, Ala.) who added 55 grabs and 1,024 receiving yards in 10 games played.
Jones, a second-team All-Conference USA performer, averages 70 yards per game ranked tied for fourth in catches per game at 5.9. He has been the reliable receiver for the Golden Eagles.
Watkins, who ranks third at the school in his career for both catches (150) and receiving yards (2,250), put together a season worthy of his All-Conference USA first team selection.
One receiver also expected back at full strength for the bowl game is senior Jordan Mitchell (Hattiesburg, Miss.), who missed much of the second half of the regular season with an injury. In seven games, he collected 369 receiving yards on 22 catches with three touchdown catches, of which two were for 51 yards or longer.
On the ground, the Golden Eagles have junior Kevin Perkins (Tunica, Miss.), who leads the team on the ground with 548 yards. Senior De'Michael Harris (Vicksburg, Miss.), who started the year at wide receiver but had to spend much of his time in the backfield due to injuries, added 541 rushing yards and 30 catches for 297 yards. Harris has five plays of 50 or more yards this season, including one kickoff return (100 yards), and two rushing and receiving plays each.
On the offensive line, three players have started in all 12 games. Senior Drake Dorbeck (Vicksburg, Miss.), the 2019 Kent Hull Trophy winner for top offensive lineman in the state of Mississippi, started every game at left tackle, while sophomore Trace Clopton (Brookhaven, Miss.) opened at center. Junior Arvin Fletcher (Madison, Miss.), maybe the most versatile offensive lineman for Southern Miss, also started in all 12 games at three different positions.
