Golden Eagles Host North Texas in C-USA Home Opener on Friday Night

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Two days removed from knocking off Alabama State for the first win of the season, the Southern Miss (1-14, 0-2 C-USA) women's volleyball team will host Conference USA foe North Texas (7-7, 1-1 C-USA) on Friday night. The Mean Green and Golden Eagles will kick-off the match at 6 p.m.
Last Time Out
On Wednesday night at Reed Green Coliseum, the Golden Eagles outlasted Alabama State in five sets. A Kaile Tuisamatatele and Liania Guillemaud block at the net sealed the Southern Miss win after the Golden Eagles were able to overcome a loss in the first set.
Guillemaud exploded for a career-high 15 kills on a .231 hitting clip. The Texas product also had three digs and a block in her first midweek contest at Reed Green. Fellow freshman Gillian Hidalgo smacked a career-high 14 kills on a .225 hitting percentage.
Piper Matsumoto, who produced her fifth double-double of the season, dished out 45 assists, 15 digs, and five kills. Madison Lawler backed the Golden Eagles defensively with a career-high 28 digs. At the net, Tuisamatatele led the way with three blocks. Kess Krutsinger, Ashley Berry, Guillemaud, and Matsumoto all recorded one block.

The Mean Green head to Hattiesburg with an overall record of 7-7. They opened C-USA play with a sweep over UAB before falling to No. 22 Rice in straight sets. North Texas holds notable nonconference wins over Cal State Fullerton, Pepperdine, and Ohio.
Valerie Valerian, who went for 21 kills against the Golden Eagles last season, leads the offensive charge for North Texas with 214 kills this season. Her .243 hitting percentage is third on a Mean Green team that ranks seventh in C-USA with a .219 hitting percentage. Kaliegh Skopal's 551 assists put her with the best of the setters in the C-USA ranks, while also averaging 10.68 assists per set. Sarah Haeussler leads the net attack with 52 blocks and Aleeyah Galdeira's 197 digs lead the Mean Green.

Southern Miss and North Texas are deadlocked at seven in the all-time series that dates back to 1991. North Texas has claimed the last three meetings, including both a season ago. The last Golden Eagle win came in 2017 at Reed Green Coliseum.
In that 2017 contest, former Golden Eagle Sarah Bell dished out an NCAA season-best 75 assists. It was the most assists in a match by any setter since 2015.
