Golden Eagles See Early Success on Day One in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. - On the opening day of the ITA Southern Regional, the Southern Miss women's tennis team saw plenty of success in Baton Rouge, La. Katia de la Garza and Ebru Zeynep Yazgan highlighted the day with a combined three wins to qualify for the Main Draw. Monique Burton also added a win.
De la Garza started her day with a win over Christina Sisti of Tulane. The junior won, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. At the same time, Burton advanced to the second round of the Qualifying Draw with a dominant win over Hanna Blinouskaya of McNeese State. The Australian cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory. With a first-round bye, Yazgan needed only one win to qualify for the Main Draw. The sophomore got that win against Caraline Scheufler of Auburn. Yazgan managed a 6-1 win before squeaking out a 6-4 second-set win. De la Garza qualified with a straight-set win over Megan Bertrands of UAB.
With Yazgan and de la Garza already qualified, Burton was the lone Golden Eagle left to play. Burton dominated with a 6-0 first-set win against Jimena Garbino, but then dropped the second set, 4-6. With a winners-take-all set looming, Burton ultimately fell in the final set, 1-6.
Yazgan and de la Garza will join Arina Amaning in the Main Draw on Friday morning. The four Golden Eagles will open the Doubles Draw at 9:30 a.m. before starting the first round of Main Draw at 10:30 a.m.
