HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss sophomore Matthieu Peres and junior Hsiang Yi Wang will begin play in the ITA Southern Regional, hosted by Auburn, on Thursday morning.
"The ITA Regional is the biggest tournament in the South," head coach Zubin Engineer said. "I'm looking forward to seeing how our team does against quality competition."
This is the Golden Eagles' second tournament of the fall, following a two-day marathon at home from Sept. 28-29. Peres competed in two doubles and three singles events during that stretch, including earning a 7-5, 0-6, 10-7 win over New Orleans' Mats Westkamp. The field was a stout one, featuring the likes of No. 28 Alabama, No. 55 South Alabama, UAB, UNO and William Carey.
Peres will go up against Diego Chavarria of the host Tigers at 9 a.m., while Wang battles Kacper Dworak (UL Lafayette) at 11 a.m. When the Golden Eagles competed in the 2018 tournament at Alabama, Peres had not yet enrolled and Wang was playing for Alabama A&M.
Dworak was 9-7 as the primary No. 6 player for the Ragin' Cajuns. Chavarria went 6-2 in spring singles for Auburn as a sophomore last season.
The full field includes Auburn, Alabama, Alabama State, Jacksonville State, Troy, South Alabama, Samford, UAB, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, New Orleans, LSU, Louisiana-Lafayette and Tulane.
