HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss softball team will kick off its fall home slate with a 4:00 p.m. (CT) 10-inning contest against Co-Lin on Friday (October 11). The game will be played at the Southern Miss Softball Complex.
Friday will mark the first opportunity for fans to get a glimpse of first-year Head Coach Brian Levin, his staff and Southern Miss' 2020 squad at home.
The Golden Eagles will look to build off of the success that they achieved during the 2019 season. Southern Miss finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 30-22 and a record of 13-11 in C-USA. 2019 also marked the first time since 2016 that Southern Miss had advanced to the C-USA Tournament and recorded a 30-win season.
Several key returners will be on display for the Golden Eagles on Friday afternoon. Highlighting the key returners will be senior shortstop Lacey Sumerlin, junior center fielder Destini Brown and junior right fielder Karley Nichols.
In May, Sumerlin became the first Southern Miss player to earn NFCA All-Region First Team honors since Megan Hill in 2009. Sumerlin landed a spot on the NFCA Division I South Region First Team. In addition, Sumerlin was tabbed a C-USA First Team All-Conference selection.
Brown, the McComb Miss. native and former Parklane Academy standout was named a C-USA First Team All-Conference selection this past spring.
Nichols, a Brandon, Miss. native and Brandon High School grad, earned C-USA Second Team All-Conference honors for her efforts during the 2019 season.
Co-Lin is led by Head Coach and former Lady Wolf Meleah (Brown) Howard, who is in her second year at the helm of the program. Co-Lin finished the 2019 season with an overall record of 31-17 and a record of 16-12 in conference play. In postseason play, the Lady Wolves made an appearance in the MACJC Tournament and then went on to advance to the Region XXIII Tournament.
