Conference USA announced Jones was named Freshman of the Week on Jan. 28.
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Kelsey Jones was named Freshman of the Week for Conference USA, announced on Jan. 28.
Jones, a Starkville, Miss. native, earned the accolade after a successful road trip to both WKU and Marshall.
Against the Lady Toppers, Jones was instrumental in the defeat of the formerly undefeated WKU. She had her third double-double of the season, putting up 14 points and 13 boards. She was almost perfect from the free throw line, missing only one shot in her nine visits to the line, going 6-for-7. She had a 53 percent game from the field, finishing 4-for-6. She also had two assists, two blocks and two steals.
At Marshall, who was a one-loss team when the Lady Eagles arrived, she was 50 percent from the field, going 3-for-6, and finished with seven rebounds as well as eight points, one assist, one block and one steal.
On the weekend, she averaged 1.5 steals and blocks.
Coach Joye Lee-McNelis on Jones
"Congratulations to Kelsey Jones, our Freshman Player of the Week; she's our second Lady Eagle to get this honor. It's so fun to watch these young players grow right before our eyes. You watch them develop as young people, as students, and as players. Kelsey has gotten better and better with every practice. She has continued to buy-in to what we're trying to do and contributing to the team. Her ability to score the basketball and her ability to rebound that gives us a mainstay inside. We just need her to continue to make progress and I think she'll be a true difference maker for us down the stretch."
