HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss volleyball team opened up the Southern Miss Classic with a 3-0 sweep of Spring Hill College. Spring Hill, a Division II team, fell to 0-2 after losing its first game to East Carolina earlier in the day.
Â
Four service aces highlighted the Golden Eagles' 17-3 run midway through the first set. The Badgers, however, were able to claw away at their deficit before losing 25-17. Southern Miss netted a match-high 44.8 hitting percentage in the first set.
Â
After the first set, the Badgers were able to engage into a slugfest for most of the second set. Tied at 12, Southern Miss was ignited by Kylie Grandy's kill that preceded a kill by Catherine Repsher to extend the lead to 18-14. Alexis Coombs also added two kills to pull away before Spring Hill gave away free points on two attack errors. Southern Miss walked away with another 25-17 win in set two.
Â
The third set opened with a monster kill by Grandy, but Spring Hill was able to stay somewhat close for the meantime. Southern Miss didn't pull away until a Badger error put them up 10-5. After that error, the Golden Eagles stepped on the gas peddle and led 18-11 a few plays later.
Â
Spring Hill cut the lead to four, but another error doomed them. Coombs slammed home a kill right before Berry added two kills of her own. Those two kills put Southern Miss up by nine, but Spring Hill was able to steal two points as they faced match point. Berry took matters into her own hands and ended the game with her ninth kill.
Â
Bell chipped away at the Southern Miss all-time assists record by recording 37 in the season opener. Grandy recorded a team-high in kills and digs with 12 and 10, respectively. Coombs registered six blocks on the day, which was four more than the entire Spring Hill team recorded. Stephanie Radecki notched her first win as the Southern Miss head coach.Â
Â
Southern Miss opens its Saturday slate against Alcorn State (0-1, 0-0 SWAC) at 11 a.m. The Golden Eagles will then conclude play at 7 p.m. against East Carolina (2-0, 0-0 AAC). Â
