HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Southern Miss Men's Basketball head coach Doc Sadler has announced the team's 2018-19 schedule.
Â
"Players and fans should be very excited about this schedule," Sadler said. "We will play a tough non-conference schedule. I do think it's a schedule that regardless of the wins and losses, it will get us ready for the conference season, and most importantly, the conference tournament."
Â
The Golden Eagles begin play Tuesday, Nov. 6 in Reed Green Coliseum against Southeastern Baptist. The next four games will be on the road as the team will travel to SMU (Nov. 11) and Troy (Nov. 15) before heading south of the border for the Cancun Challenge where they will face North Florida (Tuesday, Nov. 20) and either Western Carolina or Jacksonville State the following day.
Â
Southern Miss will then return home for a four-game homestand beginning Sunday, Nov. 25 against William Carey. They will then host South Alabama (Nov. 28), followed by contests against Rust (Dec. 2) and Millsaps (Dec. 11).
Â
The non-conference slate comes to a close with three consecutive road games at Wichita State (Dec. 15), Kansas State (Dec. 19) and South Dakota (Dec. 21). The Shockers were a No. 4 seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament, while Kansas State reached the Elite Eight.
Â
The Golden Eagles will begin conference play on the road. They will first take on rival Louisiana Tech (Dec. 29) before traveling to the Lone Star State the following weekend to play Rice (Date) and North Texas (Date).
Middle Tennessee and UAB come to Reed Green Coliseum on January 10 and January 12, respectively. Other C-USA home games include WKU (Jan. 24), Marshall (Jan. 26), Louisiana Tech (Feb. 9), UTSA (Feb. 14) and UTEP (Feb. 16).
This season marks the first in which Conference USA will utilize a new scheduling format. At the conclusion of the first seven weeks, teams will be placed in one of three groups based on conference standings through the first 14 games of league action. The teams will be divided into two groups of five (1-5 and 6-10 in the standings) and a group of four (11-14). During the final three weeks, teams will play within their respective grouping for the last four games of conference play. Home and away games within the groups will be determined by a preset formula.
Once all 18 games have been completed, the top 12 teams based on final league standings will be seeded in the conference tournament. Teams will be guaranteed seeding within their respective group. For example, if a program lands in the second group (6-10), it will seed no higher than six and no lower than 10 in the tournament field.
The final to-be-determined games can be slated over the following dates: Saturday, Feb. 23, Thursday, Feb. 28, Sunday, March 3, Wednesday, March 6 and Saturday, March 9. The Conference USA Championships will be held at Ford Center at The Star in Frisco, Texas, from March 13-16.
Southern Miss will look to continue the upward trajectory it has experienced through Sadler's first four years at the helm. The Golden Eagles have improved their C-USA win total in each of those years, and in the most recent conference tournament, took down No. 1-seed Middle Tennessee in overtime to reach the semifinals.
The Golden Eagles return four of their five starters from the 2017-18 season, including Cortez Edwards (All-Conference USA Tournament), Tyree Griffin, Kevin Holland and Dominic Magee, and finished No. 5 nationally for fewest turnovers per game.
Tip-off times and broadcast information will be announced at a later date.
