Southern Miss Goes Through Second Fall Camp Scrimmage

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Heavy afternoon rains could not keep Southern Miss from getting in its second full scrimmage of fall camp Saturday evening.
While the offense put up some good numbers, Golden Eagle head coach Jay Hopson praised the play of the defense after the scrimmage.
"Give the defense credit," said Hopson. "They came out with a lot of fire. You could tell that early in practice. They came out ready to scrimmage and did a really good job today."
The Golden Eagles defense registered three interceptions, including one each from Wydale Flott, Ky'el Hemby and DQ Thomas. Hemby also collected a pass breakup along with Ernest Gunn and both Denzel Washington and Darian Yancey added fumble recoveries.
Darius Kennedy, Jeremy Sangster and LaDarius Harris also collected two sacks each to complete the strong defensive showing in the scrimmage.
Offensively, Jack Abraham threw for 127 yards and three touchdowns on 13-of-29 throws and one interceptions. Abraham hit Neil McLaurin once from 48 yards and Quez Watkins on a pair of 3-yard throws in short-yard situations. Watkins led the receiving corps with 36 receiving yard on seven catches.
Steven Anderson collected a scrimmage-high 78 rushing yards on 21 carries with a one-yard scoring run.
The Golden Eagles will take off from practice Sunday, before returning to work with a Monday morning session.
