HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Recent Southern Miss Student-Athletes Kelsey Chambers (Volleyball) and Samantha Reynolds (Softball) have been selected as the school's nominees for the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year award.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award, established in 1991, honors the academic achievements, athletics excellence, community service and leadership of outstanding female Student-Athletes throughout their collegiate careers.
Chambers, a Rosharan, Texas, native started a career-high 25 matches in her final season and was a member of the all-time winningest senior class in program history (87 wins). As a student in the nursing program at Southern Miss, she volunteered her time with local children's centers and Southern Miss' suicide prevention services.
Reynolds, an Exercise Science student, from Chandler, Arizona, served as the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's (SAAC) President for the 2017-18 academic year. Additionally, she was a member of the Athletic Department's inaugural Leadership Academy and earned the Conference USA Commissioner's Academic Medal for posting a 3.75 GPA or better. Reynolds has been an active member of the community volunteering her time with Hurricane Harvey relief efforts, the Salvation Army's Operation Christmas Child, Christian Services food drive, and One Love's domestic violence awareness efforts.
On the field, she was named an All-Conference selection in her junior campaign while hitting .320, and selected to the Academic All-Conference team.
Nominations advance to the conference level, where the league will select up to two Student-Athletes to move forward. All conference-round nominations will be announced in early August.
Conference nominations are forwarded to the NCAA Woman of the Year Selection Committee, which identifies the Top 10 honorees in each of the three NCAA divisions. From those 30 candidates, the selection committee then determines the three finalists in each division.
The Committee on Women's Athletics will select the 2018 NCAA Woman of the Year from the nine finalists with the announcement being held at an awards dinner in Indianapolis, Oct. 28.
