
Softball Falls to Charlotte in a 5-4 Heartbreaker

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The Southern Miss softball team fell in a heartbreak single p> game on Sunday, 5-4. The Golden Eagles finish the season 19-36, 8-16 in C-USA play.
Jillian Johnson got the start in the circle, her final time as a senior, and went the distance through 10 innings, allowing five runs (four earned) and had three strikeouts.
The Golden Eagles put up double digit hits in back-to-back games with 15 in the final game of the series. Four players tallied multi-hit games including a four-hit game from junior Chase Nelson. Samantha Papp and Samantha Reynolds both notched three of their own and Ciarra Cherry marked two.
Charlotte got on the board first with an RBI single in the bottom of the first inning but Southern Miss answered back in the top of the second with an RBI single from Samantha Reynolds.
The back and forth match continued as both teams scored a single run in the third to tie it 2-2. In the bottom of the fourth, Charlotte broke the tie with an RBI single and extended their lead, 4-2, in the sixth with an RBI double.
In the top of the seventh, Nelson launched a 2 RBI homer over the right field wall to tie it back up, 4-4, with just one out but a pop up ended the game and headed into extra innings.
After exchanging scoreless inning in the 8th, 9th and top of the 10th, Charlotte knocked an RBI single to take a 5-4 lead and the game win.
