HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team drops final home game of the season to North Texas, 2-0 in the final inning. The Golden Eagles move to 8-12 in C-USA play as they head into the final weekend.
Samantha Papp had her tenth multi-hit game of the year in the rubber match putting up two hits and reached base three out of her four at bats. Ciarra Cherry and Rebekah DiLavore each had a single hit and extended their hitting streaks and on base streak.
Kim Crowson got the nod, her final appearance in the circle at the Softball Complex, and pitched 6 1/3 innings not allowing any runs until the top of the seventh. The senior moved to 9-10 on the year. Peyton Carter came in relief and pitched the final two outs.
The game was knotted 0-0 through the first six complete innings with a base runner for each team in all innings except the sixth when North Texas was retired in order.
In the top of the sixth inning the Mean Green had a no-out solo homerun, hit by Sam Rea, to break the no run trend and take a 1-0 lead. The team followed it up with a bases loaded walk to add insurance, 2-0. Southern Miss escaped the bases loaded jam with a double play from Alyssa Davis. Cherry hit a one-out double to centerfield to start the rally but back-to-back fly outs ended the threat.
Southern Miss has just one last C-USA three game series left of the season, against the Charlotte 49ers, in Charlotte. The series begins May 3 with a doubleheader and wraps up with a single game on Sunday.
