
Softball Splits with Roadrunners in C-USA Doubleheader

SAN ANTONIO, Texas - The Southern Miss softball team split with UTSA on Saturday evening. The Roadrunners took game one, 6-4, but the Golden Eagles shut them out in game two, 5-0. Southern Miss moves to 6-11 in C-USA play.
The Black and Gold combined for 13 hits on the day highlighted by a multi-hit game for Alyssa Davis in game one and a four RBI, two home run game for Destini Brown in game two.
Brown, the freshman, had not only a solo homerun but a three-run dinger to go along with her first four RBI game of the season. That game marked her second three-hit game on the season and 14th multi-hit of the year.
Senior Samantha Robles pitched a complete game shutout in game two, her sixth complete game on the season, allowing only three hits along with three strikeouts and no walks.
Southern Miss returns to Hattiesburg when they take on C-USA opponent North Texas in a three-game series on April 28 and 29.
UTSA 6, Southern Miss 4
The Golden Eagles scored all four runs in the top of the fourth inning off of three hits. Cherry led off and was hit by a pitch to give the Golden Eagles a runner at first. Nelson stepped up and hit an RBI double to score Cherry and swing the momentum in favor of the Golden Eagles. Tata Davis followed with an RBI double down the left field line to bring Nelson home and then Brown reached via UTSA error. DiLavore knocked the third double of the inning to score Brown after Davis came home on the Roadrunner error. UTSA responded and scored in each of the next innings to tie it up 4-4 in the bottom of the seventh taking the game into extra innings.
In the bottom of the eighth, a two-run homerun to left field clinched the first game of the series for the Roadrunners.
Kim Crowson started in the circle and pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing two earned runs and had two strikeouts before Jillian Johnson came in relief. Johnson pitched 1 2/3 innings and gave up one earned run with two strikeouts. Reagan Watkins entered the circle at the beginning of the eighth and was charged with the loss.
Southern Miss 5, UTSA 0
The game remained scoreless until the top of the fifth inning when Brown hit a leadoff solo homerun over the left field wall to put the Golden Eagles up 1-0.
The hitting continued in the top of the sixth inning when Samantha Papp singled to second base before advancing to third on a groundout. Kaley Fruge came in to run for her and was scored on an RBI single from Nelson. Brown stepped up to bat and knocked a three-run dinger to left field scoring Nelson, Davis and herself.
Robles and crew sat down the next six in order and sealed the win for the Golden Eagles.
