Softball Splits with Troy in Midweek Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - The Southern Miss softball team split the Thursday evening doubleheader versus Troy. The Golden Eagles dropped the first game 8-5 but picked up the win in game two, 6-5. Southern Miss moves to 11-17 on the season.
The Black and Gold collected eight hits in both games for 16 total. Senior Ciarra Cherry picked up her first homerun of the season in the second game along with four RBI on the day.
The circle saw three pitchers over the course of the doubleheader. Samantha Robles got the nod in the first game pitching five 2/3 innings before Kim Crowson came in relief and finished the game with two strikeouts. In game two, Crowson started and pitched five 2/3 innings before Jillian Johnson relieved her.
Troy 8, Southern Miss 5
Southern Miss jumped out to a 3-0 lead after three straight hits and a sac fly from Cherry to score Chase Nelson after she rattled a double down the right field line.
The Trojans answered back in the top of the third with four runs on five hits to take the lead but the Golden Eagles put another run up in the bottom of the third to tie it up.
In the top of the sixth, Troy strung together five hits to score four more runs and add insurance to the lead, 8-4.
Samantha Papp with an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh cut the lead, 8-5, but a groundout ended the game.
Southern Miss 6, Troy 5
The Trojans struck first in the top of the third inning, one run on two hits, but the Golden Eagles responded big with three runs in the bottom of the third.
Kaley Fruge notched her first triple on the season to lead the inning off and was scored after a bases loaded sac fly by Papp right before a two RBI single from Cherry brought Destini and Nelson home.
Troy scored in the top of the fifth and sixth inning but Southern Miss put up three more runs in the bottom of the sixth to add insurance. Cherry hit her first homerun of the season over the centerfield wall to lead the inning off. Tata Davis was hit by a pitch and then stole second to move her to scoring positon when Sarah Van Schaik flew out to right field to score Davis. Fruge with an RBI single to left field score Nichols but a groundout ended the scoring string.
A strikeout and two groundouts behind Johnson ended the top of the seventh inning for the Trojans and secured the win for the Golden Eagles.
Next up for Southern Miss is a three-game series in Huntington, West Virginia when they take on Marshall in the first Conference USA road trip.
