Volleyball Hosts North Texas for Senior Day

HATTIESBURG, Miss. - Five Southern seniors will take the floor at Reed Green Coliseum for their final Conference USA home game. This years senior class -- Sarah Bell, Dani Ajayi, Kylie Grandy, Alexis Coombs and Katherine Still -- is one of the best to ever wear the black and gold. The class has recorded 81 career wins, which ranks amongst some of the best classes ever at Southern Miss.Â
In the last three seasons, Southern Miss and its five seniors have won three of the five meetings against North Texas. The Mean Green and Golden Eagles will get Sunday's match started at 1 p.m. with Senior Day festivities to follow afterwards.Â
The last time out
The Golden Eagles defeated UAB on Friday in four sets to improve their Conference USA record to 6-5 and overall record to 14-12. They hopped out to a hot start and walked over the Blazers in the first set. However, UAB answered and stole the second set from a Southern Miss team that is hunting for a playoff spot.Â
The Golden Eagles responded to take the final two sets, and the match. Grandy led the way with 19 kills, four service aces and a block. Catherine Repsher added 10 kills, two aces and six blocks. Bell finished with 39 assists, five kills, nine digs, three blocks and a service ace.Â
Scouting North TexasÂ
The Mean Green enter the contest at 8-3 in C-USA play, but are just 12-15 overall. They are 6-1 in their last seven games and their lone loss came to a Rice team that is 11-0 in conference play. North Texas is led by sophomore Valerie Valerian who has 348 kills and 37 blocks. Karley York, a senior from San Antonio, Texas, has a team-high 974 assists and is averaging 10.04 per set.Â
At the net, Jordyn Williams has 87 blocks and 205 kills. Valerian and York have 262 and 259 digs, respectively.Â
What's at stakeÂ
Southern Miss sits two games behind North Texas and have two games remaining against the Mean Green this season. North Texas is tied for fourth place despite struggling outside of C-USA play. The Golden Eagles have won three of the last four meetings and three of the last five. The senior class has yet to drop a home game to North Texas.Â
