HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Southern Miss enjoys stopping the run on defense.
The Golden Eagles rank No. 3 in Conference USA in that category and No. 10 nationally in allowing just 105.7 yards rushing per contest.
Under defensive coordinator Tim Billings, Southern Miss limited eight of its 10 opponents in 2018 under its season's rushing average and has not allowed an opposing 100-yard rushing in any of those games.
The Nasty Bunch has faced four of the current top 10 in C-USA and held them all under 100 yards on the ground, including No. 2 Benny LaMay of Charlotte (81 yards), No. 3 Spencer Brown of UAB (75 yards), No. 5 DeAndre Torrey of North Texas (95 yards) and No. 6 Jaqwis Dancy of Louisiana Tech (18 yards).
Over the last three games, Southern Miss limited its opponents to under 100 rushing yards, as well as in four of the last five games and five total this season.
Against UAB, a team that averages 226.5 yards per game on the ground, the Golden Eagles held them to 97 yards.
The defense as a whole enjoys a No. 9 ranking as the squad gives up 287.5 yards per game and looking to finish in the top 20 nationally in total defense for the third-straight season.
The Golden Eagles face a UTEP team this weekend that averages 128.3 yards on the ground this season. Southern Miss looks to continue its streak of holding teams under 100 yards.
The Golden Eagles and Miners play at 2 p.m. CT/1 p.m. MT and the game can be viewed on ESPN+, as well as be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network. With a victory over the Miners, the Golden Eagles can reach bowl eligibility for the fourth-straight season and the 22nd time over the last 25 seasons.
