HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The 177th Armored Brigade and the University of Southern Mississippi have announced the Golden Eagles will again wear the brigade's Distinctive Unit Insignia on their helmets for the team's upcoming Military Appreciation game this Saturday against Marshall.
Game time is set for 2 p.m., at Carlisle-Faulkner Field at M.M. Roberts Stadium.
"We are proud to once again have our Active Duty unit associated with an organization like Southern Miss," said U.S. Army Col. Jack E. Vantress, commander, 177th Armored Brigade. "Although our fields of battle are different, we both understand the commitment and teamwork it takes to win and, we're excited to be a small part of that historic culture with USM."
The brigade's logo features the color yellow as it pays homage to the Armor branch, while the blue and red on the logo represent the Infantry and Artillery branches. The spearhead symbolizes the tactics employed in Armor warfare and represents the brigade's campaigns in World War I: St. Mihiel, Meuse-Argonne and Lorraine.
"One of the reasons that our Active Duty Soldiers love living and working in the Pine Belt is the people at Southern Miss," said Vantress. "We want to say thank you to Coach Jay Hopson, the Golden Eagle football team and all Southern Miss faithful for making the Pine Belt a perfect place for us to serve our country."
For Saturday's game, Camp Shelby has generously provided military vehicles to be on display in Spirit Park at Junior Eagle Funland as well as in Eagle Walk. In addition, the Golden Eagles will wear an emblem on their helmets to recognize Camp Shelby as well.Â
Prior to the game, there will be a flyover featuring a C-130 plane and, at halftime, there will be a swearing in Oath of Enlistment as well as on-field recognitions of veterans of foreign wars of all branches during the contest.
Golden Eagle fans can still participate in the Seats for Soldiers campaign, by making donations for $10 tickets that will be given to active, inactive, and retired military throughout the Pine Belt region to attend Southern Miss athletic events, including Saturday's contest.
