HATTIESBURG, Miss. – After playing just four games over the first six weeks of the regular season, the season heats back up for the Southern Miss football team as they play the first of seven-straight weekends starting this Saturday at North Texas.
The Golden Eagles and Mean Green meet at 1 p.m., from Apogee Stadium in a game that will be a huge game in the quest for the Conference USA West Division crown. The game can be seen on ESPN3 as well as be heard on one of the affiliates of the Southern Miss IMG Sports Network.
Southern Miss (2-2 overall, 1-0 C-USA) had their lone scheduled off week last week after dropping a tough affair at Auburn, 24-13, on Sept. 29. The Golden Eagles also had an unscheduled off week last month when their trip to Appalachian State was canceled due to Hurricane Florence.
The North Texas game starts a string of seven league games to end the regular season.
"Every game is a big game in conference play and that is no secret," said Southern Miss third-year coach Jay Hopson. "We know when we get into conference play that it is a battle, week-in and week-out."
The two teams played in the Golden Eagles' league opener a year ago and Southern Miss jumped out to a 21-7 lead, before the Mean Green (5-1, 1-1) rallied and went on to a 43-28 decision at the Rock.
Southern Miss looks to avoid letdown this weekend, but will have to do it against one of the league's best offenses and their starting quarterback, Mason Fine.
Fine leads the top scoring (41.5 points per game) and total offensive team (483.0 yards per game) and individually leads C-USA in passing average per game (319.7) and total offense per game (314.8).
The Golden Eagles have a stout offense of their own with the league's No. 2 quarterback in passing average per game (315.8) in sophomore Jack Abraham, who also ranks second in total offense (304.8). Abraham also ranks No. 2 in passing efficiency (158.5), one spot ahead of Fine (155.2).
Southern Miss goes after its first win in Denton since the 2014 campaign, losing 29-23 in their last outing there in 2016.
