HATTIESBURG, Miss. – For the first time in their careers, Kylie Grandy and Sarah Bell have been named C-USA Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week. The record-chasing duo have climbed the Southern Miss ranks in their senior seasons and made major jumps against Charlotte and Rice this past weekend.
Grandy, a Rolesville, N. C. native, started her weekend with 20 kills in a four-set win against Charlotte on Friday night. She then turned around to record a career-high 28 kills in a five-set loss to Rice. It's the eighth time this season that Grandy has recorded at least 20 kills.
Against Rice, Grandy moved into sixth all-time in Southern Miss history with 1,366 kills. She is currently five kills behind Andrea Bush for fifth all-time and is 266 from taking over the top spot. She also tacked on 28 digs this weekend to climb within 13 of the all-time top 10.
Bell, a San Antonio, Texas native, hauled in a career-high 29 digs against Rice and added one block. The 29 digs were the most by a Golden Eagle since the 2015 season. In Friday's tilt against Charlotte, Bell recorded 12 digs while adding 55 assists.
On the weekend, Bell added 106 assists to bring her into second all-time in Southern Miss history for assists. Bell is currently 48 assists from passing Crystal Zane for the top spot.
Last weekend, Bell became just the third Southern Miss player to record at least 1,000 digs and 4,000 assists in their career.
The duo will be back in action this Sunday when they host Rice at 1 p.m.
