HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) is partnering with the National Breast Cancer Foundation to raise money leading up to the football team's Oct. 20 Homecoming game.
The proceeds would go toward supplying HOPE Kits to individuals going through treatment or being diagnosed. The kits cost $50 each and contain thoughtful items such as lip balm, fuzzy socks, tea, lotion and much more.
The goal is to build a chain that surrounds the perimeter of The Rock's playing surface. The links to build the chain will be sold for $1 (or desired donation) at athletic events and around campus and Hattiesburg. These links will have the names of women and men that have gone through this illness or in their memory. The organization's goal is $1,000 in contributions, and people can also donate online.
"We are very excited to have partnered with the National Breast Cancer Foundation and be able to help in the community," SAAC president and senior women's golfer Valentina Haupt said. "Our main goal is to give a little bit of hope and happiness to those that are going through a tough time. This is the first time we are doing this campaign, and we need the help of all the Southern Miss community for it to be a successful. I believe most of us know of someone that has been through this process and this is a great way to honor those people."
The Oct. 20 football game is also Southern Miss' official Breast Cancer Awareness game, a group effort with Forrest General Hospital. Tickets for the 6 p.m. game against UTSA can be purchased through SouthernMissTickets.com, calling 1-800-844-TICK or visiting the Pat Ferlise Center during normal business hours.
