HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- Fresh off a five-set win against a previously-one loss North Texas team, Southern Miss is back to work for a 1 p.m. Sunday battle with UTSA inside Reed Green Coliseum.
The action can be found via CUSA.tv (subscription required for all Southern Miss sports all season) as well as The Score 1400 AM in Hattiesburg. Southern Miss has won 35 of its last 41 home matches.
Several Golden Eagles had remarkable outings on Friday night, some of which having significant historical ties. Sarah Bell posted 75 assists, marking just the sixth time since 2000 that a Golden Eagle eclipsed the 70-mark. Chandler Marshall and Kylie Grandy each tallied career-highs of 25 kills, and Natalie Druhan recorded a personal-best 27 digs, with her final one setting up the eventual match-winning kill.
Marshall also crept back into the No. 9 spot in the league with 3.22 kills/set. Bell's previous career-high was 62 assists in the 2016 finale at Rice.
Southern Miss (10-6, 1-0 C-USA) is now 2-2 in five-set matches.
UTSA (2-10) was picked one spot ahead of the Golden Eagles at third in the preseason C-USA poll. The Roadrunners have faced a true gauntlet of a schedule with bouts against No. 2 Minnesota, No. 6 Texas, TCU, West Virginia and Baylor among others. UTSA has won all eight head-to-head matchups with Southern Miss, including a sweep during the opening conference weekend last season.
