HATTIESBURG, Miss. -- The Southern Miss Golden Eagles donned the pads for the first time of the spring practice season on a cloudy Friday afternoon. The first half was spent at the Joe P. Park Practice Fields before shifting to The Rock.
The team was able to make more contact and get better live looks.
Head coach Jay Hopson
On how the team looked in pads:
"I thought we were physical. Certainly it's still the third day of spring and there are plenty of corrections to still go over, but I thought we competed well and had good energy today. You're looking for guys who do things right, and that's the reality of it. You'll look at it and go over it Tuesday."
On Keon Howard's quarterback play:
"I thought Keon made some good reads today. I thought he had a good day. Overall we did some good things and defensively we had a good day too."
Secondary coach Dan Disch
On the overall outlook of his unit:
"We've got a long way to go. We've got some young guys getting some reps. We're getting a little older at cornerback and some youth and inexperience at safety, but the kids are working hard and doing what we ask them to do. It's been a good three days, but it's still early."
On how different roles are playing out:
"We've thrown a lot of different guys in there to see what shakes out. Tarvarius Moore has played some snaps obviously, and we moved Demetrius Market to see what he could do, and Jomez Applewhite and Xavier Marion too. It's a working progress across the board. Most of it is the effort you bring every day, and if you continue to do that then you will get better."
Offensive lineman Devin Farrior
On how spring has looked so far:
"First few days of practice, we are getting used to each other. New guys and new styles. That's the most important thing these few weeks. Spring practice is all fundamentals. You need that before you go out on the field, and then we will go out on the field and get more finesse."
On new offensive line coach Erik Losey and his "juice" mentality:
He's a high energy guy and a perfectionist. He gets on us, but we respond well to it. He likes to speed it up and I think that'll be good for our offensive line. Juice is energy. He will come around the locker room and come up to you and tell you "juice," to just have high energy.
