HATTIESBURG, Miss. -The Southern Miss softball team dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 12 LSU at the Softball Complex in Hattiesburg on Tuesday night in front of a record crowd.
Southern Miss recorded four hits on the night against the nationally-ranked Tigers. Lauren Holifield paced the team finishing 2-for-3 on the night. Holifield padded her team lead in hitting (.340), home runs (3), and RBI (9). Samantha Reynolds and Selena Estrada also recorded hits on the night. Samantha Papp drew a walk in the game.
In the circle, Jillian Johnson earned the start, her fifth on the season. The junior pitched a complete game allowing four runs (two earned) on six hits with five walks and one strikeout.
Southern Miss was the first to score off a Lauren Holifield leadoff home run in the bottom of the first inning.
The teams exchanged scoreless innings until the top of the fourth when LSU struck back with two runs in each of the fourth and fifth innings. A two-out single to left field preceded two errors that allowed the third and fourth runs of the game.
The Golden Eagles tried to rally back in the top of the seventh with three pinch hitters. Reynolds singled to third base, the third of the night, and advanced to second on a throwing error by the Tigers. Estrada followed up with a single to left field bringing Reynolds in for an RBI.
